Equity Trader

SWIB is seeking an Equity Trader to join its three-member trading team. The new Equity Trader will play a critical role in growing the organization’s capabilities to trade various derivative instruments, including futures and options.

Essential Activities
Trading domestic and international equities, related derivatives, and foreign currencies to ensure achievement of portfolio management objectives, best execution, and appropriate trading room coverage.
Consulting with and advising portfolio managers and senior analysts to ensure timely and optimal execution of all trades, and to identify unplanned securities purchase and sale opportunities.
Serving as a subject matter expert in trade execution for foreign currencies and for various derivatives, including futures and options; and helping develop trade execution capabilities for these instruments.
Contributing to the team concept of the trading room. This includes partnering with portfolio managers and investment analysts to help them achieve investment objectives, contributing to the free flow of market and security information in the trading room, and cross-training with other traders to enable flexible trading team coverage.
Maintaining high proficiency and ongoing learning in all trading and information systems and processes to promote maximum efficiency of trading tools.
Allocating commissions appropriately and maintaining value-added relationships with brokers and research firms to improve execution, reduce commission costs, and maximize SWIB’s timely access to information.
Maintaining accurate and timely trading records and reports, and helping to resolve any trading discrepancies constructively.
Helping monitor external investment managers by reviewing their trades periodically, and attending external manager conference calls and site visits.

Candidate Qualifications
A Bachelor’s in business, finance, economics or similar degree required.
Trading experience with multiple asset classes and instruments including equities, derivatives, and foreign exchange.
International trading experience in multiple markets including Europe, the Pacific Rim, and the Americas preferred.
Proficiency with electronic trading tools: order management systems, Bloomberg, and other industry software as needed. Strong analytical and information technology skills (such as algorithmic trading proficiency) are desirable.
Ability to understand the broader investment objectives behind trade orders and to consult proactively with portfolio managers and investment analysts to advise them on the best ways to leverage trading capabilities to achieve their broader goals.
Strong, honest and direct communication skills, with the ability to clearly and quickly communicate ideas and recommendations verbally and in writing to all levels of staff, management and board members.
Comfort taking initiative, being resourceful, cross-training, and supporting colleagues within a team trading room environment.
Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Maturity, good judgment, and a professional demeanor.

The position requires U.S. work authorization and current residency in, or willingness to relocate to, the Madison, Wisconsin area. SWIB is prepared to offer relocation assistance as needed.

Occasional travel may be required for this position.
