BMO Capital Markets, the U.S. based investment and corporate banking practice of BMO Financial Group (NYSE: BMO), is an integrated full-service mid-market investment bank. We offer corporate and institutional clients a complete range of financial services, including financial advisory and capital raising services, mergers and acquisitions and equity research, sales and trading services.

BMO Capital Markets is currently looking for Trading Associate, Junior Trader to support its U.S. Bond Trading business. As a member of the U.S. Bond Trading team, the Associate reports to the Managing Director and provides clients with coverage, including firm research and trading (buy/sell) merchandise. The Associate is expected to maximize profit based on customer flow and experience while minimizing bank risk and adhering to position and loss limits. The Associate is expected to work closely with the Sales team in attaining and retaining customer business.


1) Client Support and Relationship Management
• Must provide competitively priced liquidity to corporate, institutional, and interbank clients. Must be able to provide quotes, hedging advice, and market information in support of the customer business and arbitrage opportunities.
• Support sales activities with trading strategies, definition and market information customized to suit their client’s individual needs. Will be available to accompany all sales staff to assist with client calls, presentations, and seminars.
• Beyond assisting sales staff to increase client volumes, the role must actively market financial institutions to increase order flow, volume and market information
• Develop and leverage relationships across LOBs, with executive and external clients to foster and support intra-group coordination while carrying out accountabilities.

2) Transaction Management
• Receive order ticket from Sales and inspects form to ensure accuracy of information.
• Execute orders for purchase or sales of securities or completes transaction independently if brokerage firm is market maker in requested transaction. All transactions must be recorded accurately and frequently reviewed for accuracy.
• Writes and signs sales order confirmation forms to record and approve transactions.
• Reviews all transactions to ensure that trades conform to the regulations of SEC, NASD, and other regulatory agencies. Each trader must be aware of and abide by all regulatory requirements.
• Track supply and demand and evaluate market development.

3) Risk Management
• Responsible for the prudent management of the Bank’s exposure. Must operate within position and loss limits.
• Manage risk related to pricing and trading of the book.
• Manage firm’s risk exposure on the existing book.
• Take action to reduce risk, including the development of hedging and trading strategies


a) Knowledge
• Four-year college or university degree in Accounting/Economics/ Mathematics/Statistics, CFA preferred
• 3-5 years of industry related experience
• Working knowledge of financial markets with previous exposure to the bond markets and/or analysis gained through a combination of work and educational qualifications is required.
• Thorough knowledge of bond market, pricing, and trading/hedging strategies and familiarity with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices and procedures
• Basic understanding of trading procedures and broader regulatory and financial concepts
• Series 7, 63, and 55 required or attained within 6 months.

• Strong quantitative, technology and finance skills
• Strong risk management skills, fundamental analysis skills and leadership abilities
• Ability to find and communicate ongoing events that affect or that can affect the market
• Delivers clear, effective communication and takes responsibility for understanding others
• Able to exercise independent thought and judgment and adapt to new tasks with little notice
• Details and results oriented and able to prioritize tasks in a multi-task environment
• Demonstrated computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and spreadsheets quickly. Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint, Outlook, Bloomberg, Reuters and other market data packages.
• Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
• Ability to prioritize competing responsibilities working in a fast-paced, highly pressured work environment
• Strong focus on meeting client needs
• Ability to discern trading desk dynamics
